MSHSL Football AAAAA Semifinals Score: Cooper – 7 | Mahtomedi: 34
Hear from Head Coach Willie Howard:
This message is to speak about how proud I am of our players at Robbinsdale Cooper High School.
Tonight we did not get a win on the scoreboard, and that sucks. But what we did do is win over the hearts of an amazing community. Our young men and women dedicated in the off-season to getting better. They let their guard down to accept new coaching. They lost a coach that they loved. They are held to higher standards In school and in our community. They work so hard. So the loss in semifinals of MN state football will not be what defines us.
For tonight, players went out there with heavy hearts. I have said all year long Joe Russell is the best QB out there, and to lose him for the game on Wednesday of game week hurts. Yes, he couldn’t play, and him playing definitely allows us to be Cooper, but what was more heavy is knowing that for him he couldn’t play this game because he is a leader. He is smart. And he is loved and respected. Game had to go on and so dang proud of Camden Royal coming back after an injury to put it on the line for his team, as well as:
- David Connors Jr. playing through injury
- Donte Williams Jr. fighting through injuries
- Richard Lahr fighting through injuries
- DeShawn Ricks fighting through injuries
- Jaxon Howard stepping in to play QB on one day of practice while also having multiple injuries.
You see the moral to this is that our community saw our players literally define what it means to be a FAMILY.
FORGET. ABOUT. ME. I. LOVE. YOU.
THEY ALLLLLLLLLLL risked it all for a chance to play one more game.
Our community stepped up big time all year:
- Polaris
- Theilen Foundation
- Big Louie’s
- Milton’s
- Dunkin
- Tri Construction
- NMC Exteriors & Remodeling
- Luther Automotive
Our fans came out to support every dang week.
Sooooo dang proud to have them there to cheer us.
We had a send off from our local police👮♂️ and firefighters 🚒 letting us know they are here for us.
This is what changing a culture and a community looks like.
This is why you sacrifice all your sleep as a coach.
I am so dang grateful for every coach on my staff.
I am proud to say that you all have pushed me to be great and require me to give my best.
I pray that this team is an example of what it looks like to bring a group of people from so many different backgrounds and bring a community together.
My team emptied the tank. My team gave 100%. My team will be remembered forever — made it to the bank for the first time in school history.
But the biggest accomplishment of the season: My team knows I love them and will have their back.
Players: Rest then know you must lead on your winter sport. Take this leadership and inspire others to be great.
